Around the NFC West: May 22, 2013

Bruce Arians' complaints about the Arizona Cardinals' wide receivers made headlines Tuesday. A little context is in order.

"I really don't like mental mistakes," Arians told reporters, "especially if you made the same mistake last week. That should be corrected and in the books by now, and our receivers are not getting that done."

Arians has high expectations for his team at receiver. He made that clear when discussing the position from the NFL owners meeting two months ago. It's tough to know whether he was frustrated with veteran wideouts or players further down the depth chart, but we should know he likes the position overall.

"It's the best situation at receiver that I have ever walked into," Arians said in March. "It's not the position I've been worrying about."

Arians' comments Tuesday sounded like something a coach would say to push players at a position. Arians has made clear his passion for offense. He has called plays for the past six seasons while with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Indianapolis Colts. He will continue calling plays as the Cardinals' head coach after filling both roles with the Colts last season.

When the offense falters, even in practice, we should expect Arians to at times take it personally.
