Game 49: Yankees (25-23) @ Athletics (18-32)

OAKLAND -- The New York Yankees try to bounce back from last night's 5-4 loss, and Chris Capuano tries to make a case for his spot in the rotation, in the second game of a four-game series with the Oakland Athletics (10:05 p.m., YES).

With Masahiro Tanaka about to rejoin the team -- he is starting Wednesday against the Mariners in Seattle -- the Yankees will be trimming their starting rotation by one body, and right now, Capuano (0-2, 7.36) seems to be the leading candidate. He missed the first six weeks of the season with a quad injury suffered in spring training and has been largely ineffective in his two starts since being reinstated May 17. He lasted 4 1/3 innings in his last start, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in a 5-2 loss to Texas.

Here is the lineup Joe Girardi is sending out behind Capuano against Oakland's impressive right-hander, Sonny Gray:

Brett Gardner LF

Chase Headley 3B

Alex Rodriguez DH

Brian McCann C

Carlos Beltran RF

Garrett Jones 1B

Stephen Drew 2B

Chris Young CF

Didi Gregorius SS

Capuano LHP

Mark Teixeira is getting a routine day off tonight ... Capuano is 1-1 with a 3.68 ERA vs. Oakland in four career appearances (one start). But he has only faced four members of the current roster, and for only a handful of ABs each .... the Yankees faced Gray last June 13 and beat him here, scoring three runs on seven hits in six innings in a 7-0 victory.
