The Yankees have hired Eric Chavez as a special assignment scout, GM Brian Cashman confirmed.
Chavez, 37 in December, played 44 games with Arizona, hitting .246 this past season. He retired at the end of July, forfeiting around a million bucks of his $3.5 million salary. Chavez made more than $84 million in his career, according to Baseball-Reference.com.
When Chavez was with the Yankees in 2011-12, he spoke about one day wanting to manage. The Yankees do have a hitting coach spot open, but it doesn't appear right now that will be Chavez's job.
CBS Sports first reported the Chavez move.
