Rapid Reaction: Yankees 5, Rays 4

NEW YORK -- The Yankees were nearly no-hit by Alex Cobb, but instead rallied and won on a Chris Young three-run homer in the ninth.

Rally: After Rays reliever Jake McGee hit Chase Headley in the face to start the ninth, Ichiro Suzuki lined a double to left-center, which put the tying run at second and the winning run at the plate with no outs. McGee struck out pinch hitter Zelous Wheeler before Young came to the plate.

When he did, Young launched the three-run game winner over the left-field wall.

Mr. Met: Cobb maintained the no-hit bid into the eighth, when Young smacked a one-out, no-doubt-about-it double into right-center. Before that, the Yankees were never close to a hit. Cobb was taken out after the double and got a nice round of applause from the Yankees crowd.

Scary moment: In the ninth, Headley was drilled on the chin by McGee's 96 mph fastball. Headley stayed on the ground for a long time. Besides being attended to by trainers, Yankees' team doctor Chris Ahmad eventually ran on the field. Headley walked off, which was a good sign.

Jeter hit: Derek Jeter was nailed on his elbow by a 94 mph fastball. Jeter was wearing an elbow pad, but it stung, as Joe Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue came out to check on him. The thought that Jeter's career might end on the pitch had to cross many Yankees fans' minds. However, he stayed in the game. Still, it will be something we'll be checking on postgame.

Prado in a pinch: Pinch hitting in the eighth, Martin Prado hit a two-run homer off Brad Boxberger to cut the Rays' lead to 4-2. It was only the second pinch-hit homer for the Yankees all year.

Walks: With one out in the seventh, Cobb walked Brian McCann and Teixeira. They were the first Yankees baserunners since the third, when center fielder Kevin Kiermaier dropped a Stephen Drew fly ball. The Kiermaier error ended Cobb's perfect game attempt.

First take: The Rays took the lead on a three-run homer by Yunel Escobar in the fourth. The Rays rallied with two outs. Pineda might have escaped the inning but on a soft grounder, Jeter was too slow to throw out Wil Myers.

A two-out single by Matt Joyce followed before Escobar went yard. In the seventh, Escobar added a solo shot off Pineda to make it 4-0.

Pineda's night: Pineda was the second-best starter on Thursday, but he wasn't terrible, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing four runs, all off Escobar's bat.

Attendance: 32,627.

Standings: Here are the latest.

On deck: The Yankees go to Baltimore for a day-night doubleheader. Brandon McCarthy (6-4, 2.79) faces Kevin Gausman (7-7, 3.83) in the first game. In the nightcap, Joe Girardi should soon name his starter, but it very well could be rookie Bryan Mitchell. Bud Norris (12-8, 3.92) will start for the Orioles.
