          Rapid Reaction: Indians 3, Yankees 0

          NEW YORK -- The Yankees have been playing well of late, but if you want to know the biggest reason they could miss out on the second wild card -- it's their offense. Corey Kluber and three relievers shut them out Saturday.

          Honus work: Derek Jeter passed Honus Wagner to move into solo sixth place on the MLB career hits list.

          Drawing a crowd: On the day Paul O'Neill was honored, the Yankees had their 11th sellout of the year, with an announced crowd of 47,376.

          Big Mac: Brandon McCarthy did what Brandon McCarthy has done as a Yankee -- he pitched very well. He gave up only two runs in his 6 1/3 innings. The runs came on Jose Ramirez's first career long ball that just scraped over the right-field wall. McCarthy did enough to win.

          Dating back to his final games with the Diamondbacks, it was the first time McCarthy's team has lost (seven straight wins).

          That's Kluber with a 'K': Kluber has been one of the best pitchers in baseball this year, and he showed why against the Yankees. Kluber went six shutout innings, giving up four hits, striking out 10 and walking just one.

          RISP fail: The Yanks were 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position; that oh-fer part is always the case when you are shut out.

          Deja vu: McCarthy once took a liner off his head, so when Michael Brantley's hard shot came right at him in the third, it had to be a little scary.

          Fortunately, it was much lower, drilling McCarthy on the foot instead of the noggin. After he was attended to by trainer Steve Donohue and by Joe Girardi, he remained in the game.

          Chasing: With two outs and the bases loaded, Chase Whitley got Mike Aviles to strike out on a 3-2 pitch to end the top of the seventh. In the eighth, Whitley gave up a solo shot to Brantley.

          That's Rich: Whitley had replaced lefty Rich Hill in the seventh inning. Hill, who is on the team because the Yankees let Matt Thornton go for nothing, allowed a single to Chris Dickerson to load the bases. Hill did get Jason Kipnis to ground to first baseman Chase Headley, who threw home for a force. With two outs, Whitley entered.

          What's next: The Yankees and Indians close out this three-gamer Sunday with Hiroki Kuroda (7-7, 3.97) facing Carlos Carrasco (3-4, 3.88). First pitch is 1:05 p.m.
