Rapid Reaction: O's 3, Yankees 1 (5)

BALTIMORE -- The Yankees (47-47) fell to .500 in a rain-shortened Sunday night game. The rain started at 9:48 p.m., and the game was called just past midnight.

Chased: Chase Whitley is the Yankees' fifth starter right now mostly because the Yankees don't have anyone else. Joe Girardi wasn't going to give Whitley much rope -- and he didn't.

In the fourth, Whitley allowed a two-run homer to Chris Davis and a Jonathan Schoop RBI single. Girardi would take him out with two outs in the fourth.

Brett The Hit Man: When Brett Gardner nailed his home run to lead off the game, it was his ninth of the year, which is a career high. That is pretty impressive considering we have just now reached the All-Star break.

Gardner's timing isn't perfect because he just signed a four-year, $52 million deal. If he hadn't, he would have been a free agent and surely would have gotten more. Still, he took the security and you can live on $52M.

On deck: The All-Star break. Derek Jeter and Dellin Betances were taking a private jet to Minnesota, where it will be Jeter-Palooza over the next two days. Jeter may be a little tired.
