BALTIMORE -- Rookie Shane Greene was Tanaka-like dominating the Orioles to push the Yankees (47-46) above .500 and reduce their deficit to four games in the AL East.
Greene Machine: Green's final line: 7 1/3 scoreless innings, four hits, two walks and nine strikeouts. He left with one out in the eighth, having thrown 106 pitches.
Deja Vu: In two career starts, Greene, 25, now has two games in which he no-hit his opponent for 4 2/3 innings. In his first start, Greene finished by going six innings and allowing just two runs in the 5-3 win in Cleveland.
Cruz Controlled: Greene struck out Nelson Cruz three times, including to end the sixth, leaving the tying run at third.
Not looking Greene: Greene did not give up a hit until there were two outs in the fifth. Manny Machado's clean single through the hole on the left side gave Greene a chance to demonstrate he can escape trouble.
Ryan Flaherty singled and stole second, which brought up Nick Hundley with the two runners in scoring position. Greene smoked Flaherty with a 2-2 95 mph fastball to end the inning. Greene pounded his glove to celebrate.
Great stuff: Greene's fastball was consistently at 95 mph, which he combined with a sinker, a slider and a curve. His stuff is real.
On the board: Mark Teixeira continues shine at the plate. In the third, Teixeira gave the Yankees the game's first run, driving a two-out double down the right field line. Derek Jeter, who had singled, attempted to score from first. However, a nicely executed relay from right fielder Nick Markakis to second baseman Ryan Flaherty to Hundley just nailed Jeter at the plate.
Captain Clutch: In the seventh, the Yankees finally added a second run when Jeter knocked a two-out single to left. Kelly Johnson scored from second, just beating Steve Pearce's throw. The crowd -- which, per usual, includes its fair share of Yankee fans -- loudly chanted, "Der-ek Jeter, Der-ek Jeter, Der-ek Jeter"
Jaking it: Jacoby Ellsbury brought home Jeter with an RBI double in the seventh. The cushion was 3-0 for the Yankees.
Tap Dancing: Since hitting coach Kevin Long rid Brian McCann of his toe tap prior to last Sunday's game, McCann is hitting .359 in 39 at-bats. He went 3-for-4 on Sunday as the DH. He fouled a ball sharply off his right foot in the seventh, but stayed in the game to single up the middle. On the knock, Ellsbury was thrown out by a mile at the plate for the last out of the inning.
The Save: David Robertson handled the ninth for his 23rd save.
On-Deck: The Yankees will finish up the first half on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. The Orioles will send Kevin Gausman (3-2, 3.51) vs. TBA. It will likely be Chase Whitley, followed by a committee of relievers.
