          Brown, Centeno out; 4 others dumped

          NEW YORK -- Outfielder Andrew Brown and catcher Juan Centeno have been lost by the


          lastname Centeno


          lastname Brown Mets after they were placed on waivers for the purpose of removing them from the 40-man roster.

          Brown was claimed by the Oakland Athletics. Centeno was claimed by the Milwaukee Brewers.

          The Mets also removed Scott Rice, Josh Satin, Buddy Carlyle and Dana Eveland. Those four, although technically outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas, will become free agents.

          The Mets need to begin clearing room because the 40-man roster had been full entering the offseason and prospects need to be protected from the Rule 5 draft.

          Matt Harvey and Bobby Parnell returning from the 60-day DL replace free agents Daisuke Matsuzaka and Bobby Abreu. So the subtractions of Brown, Centeno, Rice, Satin, Carlyle and Eveland place the Mets at 34 on the 40-man roster.

          Brown, 30, hit .182 with two homers and seven RBIs in 44 major league at-bats this season and was snubbed for a September call-up.

          Centeno, 24, hit .200 with two RBIs in 30 at-bats.
