GM35 HR5 RBI8 R14 OBP.252 AVG.164 SAN FRANCISCO -- Terry Collins said he intended to start Jason Bay on Tuesday against Tim Lincecum, but the left fielder is unable to play because he fouled a ball off a calf during Monday's series opener, causing it to stiffen.

Andres Torres also is out, a day after his right thumb was stepped on by Madison Bumgarner after they got tangled on a play at first base.

Collins said an X-ray of Torres' hand did not reveal a break, but an MRI was sent to New York for team doctors to review. Collins suspects Torres has a tendon or ligament issue.

With the Mets having only three available outfielders, Jordany Valdespin starts in center field, flanked by Scott Hairston and Mike Baxter.
