Mets first-rounder's role model: Derek Jeter

Mets first-round picks Gavin Cecchini and Kevin Plawecki were introduced at Citi Field on Friday. The two took batting practice, met David Wright and then held a news conference. Cecchini, a shortstop, noticeably wore No. 2.

Why?

"Derek Jeter is my favorite player," said Cecchini, 18, who looked as skinny and young as Jeter did when he came out of Michigan 20 years ago.

"The reason he is my favorite player is because he plays the game hard always. He runs balls out hard. He is a great role model for me and all the rest of the kids. You never hear any off-field problems and he is a great guy, a great team leader and a great team player."

When Cecchini finished, Mets GM Sandy Alderson chimed in, "Can we strike that from the record?"

Cecchini, the 12th overall pick, said his career goal is to help the Mets win a championship. Cecchini is from Louisiana and received a signing bonus of $2.3 million.

Cecchini will start at Single-A Kingsport, while Purdue catcher Plawecki the 35th overall pick, will go to Single-A Brooklyn.
