Terry Collins rejects criticism about using closer with four-run lead

NEW YORK -- New York Mets manager Terry Collins was not in the mood for second-guessing about inserting closer Jeurys Familia for the top of the ninth inning with a four-run lead on Friday.

Familia loaded the bases, forced in a run with a walk to Yasmani Grandal, and then surrendered a game-tying three-run double to Chase Utley. The Mets salvaged a 6-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers when Curtis Granderson delivered a walk-off homer against Pedro Baez to open the bottom of the ninth.

“You know, you guys always ask that,” Collins said about inserting Familia with a 5-1 lead. “If the leadoff hitter gets on, who comes in? Because it becomes a save situation. In a game like that, you can’t worry about tomorrow. You’ve got to win tonight, so you bring him in.”

Asked if he believed Familia’s struggles had anything to do with working in a non-save situation, Collins drily said: “Probably. It probably really did.”

Asked if he was serious, Collins added: “No. C’mon. He’s pitched 20 times in those situations. He’s ready to go. There’s nothing wrong. He had a bad night. That’s what happens.”

Familia was unavailable for comment postgame, a team spokesman said.
