Jets release LB A.J. Edds, sign cornerback

With a glut of linebackers on the 53-man roster, the New York Jets released A.J. Edds, the team announced Tuesday.

Edds played in four games, but didn't see any time on defense. He was used exclusively on special teams, including 21 snaps in Sunday's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The depth chart at linebacker had grown to 10 players, with the return of Antwan Barnes two weeks ago. Rookie Trevor Reilly, out the last two games with a knee injury, could be ready to return this week.

To fill Edds' spot on the roster, the Jets signed cornerback Marcus Williams, an undrafted rookie, from the practice squad. They may promote quarterback Matt Simms later in the week, depending on Geno Smith's shoulder injury.
