SEATTLE -- Jets owner Woody Johnson reached out to offer condolences to a Staten Island widow whose husband and son -- devout Jets fans -- were killed during Hurricane Sandy.

John K. Filipowicz, 51, and his son, John C., 20, were found dead in the basement of their Oakwood Beach home, according to a story in the Staten Island Advance. Both were buried wearing Jets jerseys.

Johnson heard about the tragedy and reached out to the family on Wednesday.

"They spoke for a while,” Neil, the elder Filipowicz’s brother, told the newspaper. “He was very kind, and expressed his deepest condolences.”

Johnson endured his own family tragedy nearly three years ago, when his 30-year-old daughter, Casey, was found dead in Los Angeles. Johnson spoke of his daughter during the conversation with Filipowicz, the newspaper said.

The Jets are donating $500,000 to the hurricane relief efforts, they announced Thursday. They also will also dedicate its Thanksgiving night game against the Patriots to the storm’s victims. There will be a moment of silence before the kickoff.

A group of 100 first responders will participate in a pre-game ceremony, holding a field-sized American flag during the national anthem. During the pre-game introductions, they will form a tunnel that the players can pass through.

Johnson invited Filipowicz's widow, Christine, to the game.

“The idea that they’re willing to do something nice for my sister-in-law, I think that’s a great thing,” Neil Filipowicz said. 
