Melo: Tough for college PGs to transition to NBA

NEW YORK -- Carmelo Anthony was very careful about sharing his opinion on the New York Knicks' potential draft picks last week.

He said that he thinks the players who will likely enter the draft make for a "pretty powerful" class.

Other than that, he didn't offer many specifics. But Anthony did say that he thinks it's difficult for point guards to make the transition from college basketball to the NBA due to the caliber of point guard in the pros.

"I think with younger point guards now coming out of college, that position is a little tougher to come in and be effective right away," Anthony said. "The guards in this league that we have right now is out of this world. They're at the top of their game right now. It’s kind of every team, every night, day in and day out so you have to be physically ready for that and mentally ready for that.

"So I think from that position it’s a little more of a learning curve than it is at any other position. Not saying that the guards that’s coming out this year can’t come in and be effective and be ready but that’s the toughest position right now in our NBA so it will be a little bit of a learning curve."

Given Anthony's tone, this probably shouldn't be construed as how the Knicks feel about taking a point guard in the 2015 draft. But it is interesting nonetheless.

The Knicks are guaranteed a top-five pick in the draft. Point guards Emmanuel Mudiay and D'Angelo Russell are widely viewed as top-five picks as are big men Jahlil Okafor and Karl Anthony-Towns.

Hardaway Jr. hopes to be back:

If you are into parsing words, you might find Tim Hardaway Jr.’s comments about his summer plans interesting.

“Get stronger, get faster, watch a lot of film on this season on what I can do better. And hopefully I’m back, I want to be back,” he said.

It’s a bit interesting that Hardaway Jr. would say he hopes to be back. He is a young, talented player on a rookie contract and is one of the Knicks’ few valuable trade chips.

The second-year guard had a strong finish to the season. Later in his interview on Wednesday, Hardaway Jr. expressed confidence about his future with the team.

“I feel confident in myself, I feel confident in this team and I’m just ready to get started again,” Hardaway Jr. said.

Question: Do you agree with Carmelo Anthony's thoughts on college point guards? Do you think the Knicks should look to trade Hardaway Jr.?
