Nate Silver: Knicks have 3 percent chance of winning an NBA title in next five years

According to one metric, Phil Jackson faces pretty long odds in his quest to bring a title to New York.

Fivethirtyeight.com has taken a look at every NBA team’s chances of winning an NBA title by 2018-19.

It used three factors to determine the odds:

1. How good is the team now?

2. How old is the team?

3. How good is its best player?

The outlook isn’t pretty for the Knicks.

According to Nate Silver, the founder and editor-in-chief of Fivethirtyeight.com, the Knicks have a 3 percent chance of winning an NBA title over the next five seasons.

You can look at the full results here.

Jackson, of course, hopes to defy those odds. The Knicks, who haven’t won a title since 1973, are off to a horrendous start this season. They are 5-22 -- the worst start in franchise history through 27 games.

But Jackson’s plan is to rebuild the team through free agency and the draft.

The Knicks have a first-round draft pick in 2015, and they expect to have significant cap space this summer to chase free agents.

The plan is to add a free agent or two around Carmelo Anthony and chase a title while Anthony is still in or near his prime.

But the odds, according to Silver, are against that happening.
