Jets WR Brandon Marshall looks like a 'really big, awkward high school kid'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- In a span of six weeks, Brandon Marshall lost the equivalent of three bricks -- 19 pounds.

The New York Jets wide receiver weighed 244 pounds at the conclusion of minicamp in mid-June. On Wednesday, he reported to training camp at 225, crediting what he calls "The Todd Bowles Diet." Naturally, he's getting razzed by teammates.

"He looks like a really big, awkward high school kid," Eric Decker joked.

Marshall is anything but gangly, but he's noticeably thinner than the 2015 version of himself. He might need to buy new suits for his weekly TV gig.

Players usually cut weight when they have a bad year, but Marshall enjoyed perhaps the greatest season for a wide receiver in team history. He set franchise records for catches (109) and receiving yards (1,502). But there's another number to know -- 32. That's his age.

Mindful of that, Bowles told Marshall he'd like him at 230, a few pounds below his usual playing weight. Marshall took to social media, revealing his coach's challenge and keeping his followers abreast of his dietary adventure. He posted pictures of unappetizing meals such as grouper and blueberries.

Yum.

"I said, 'Brandon, I want you down,'" Bowles said. "He went on a diet and it became the Todd Bowles Diet. Somehow, it took off running. I don't know what else to say."

Maybe Bowles should market the diet.

"Sure, if you give me half the proceeds," he joked.

Bowles said Marshall's ideal weight is 230, but he has no problem with 225 because it affords him some "fluctuation room."

Naturally, Marshall believes he's quicker at the lighter weight, and you could see it on the practice field. On Thursday, he ran a "go" route and connected with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. He called it the best deep ball he has ever received from Fitzpatrick, but it also was an impressive burst by Marshall.

"He looks great," Decker said. "That's hard to do, when you play at a weight for five, six years and you cut (19) pounds. Demaryius Thomas, when I was in Denver, did a similar thing. Those guys, I don't know how they do it. They still look ginormous and fast. He must have good genes."

And, now, smaller jeans.
