Todd Bowles wins award for top assistant coach

Todd Bowles will have some new hardware to display in his office at One Jets Drive.

The coach of the New York Jets, formerly the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator, was voted the Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year, it was announced Saturday night. This was the first year for the category.

Bowles received 22 of the 50 votes, ahead of Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli (12 votes) and Philadelphia Eagles special teams coach Dave Fipp (two). You might interested in knowing that Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, one thought to be the frontrunner for the Jets' head-coaching vacancy, got one vote. Quinn will be introduced next week as the coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

Bowles lost a handful of starters last season, but the defense finished fifth in points allowed and the Cards made the playoffs.
