Report: Jets special teams coach wants to pursue job at alma mater

There are three games left in the New York Jets' season, but special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey has his eye on another job.

McGaughey told a Houston TV station he's interested in pursuing the head-coaching vacancy at the University of Houston, his alma mater.

"Obviously, I'm very interested in the job," McGaughey told FOX26 Sports. "Anytime you get a chance to come back and coach at your alma mater, and potentially be the head coach, it's a great opportunity. So I'm really excited about that opportunity if it comes about."

Houston fired coach Tony Levine.

McGaughey's ties to the Houston area run deep. He grew up there, played defensive back for the Cougars from 1991 to 1995, and served as an assistant coach in 2003 and 2004 at the school. He said his agent will be in touch with school officials.

This is McGaughey's first season with the Jets.
