Jets' Geno Smith (shoulder) resumes throwing

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Quarterback Geno Smith, who didn't throw in practice Wednesday because of an ailing right shoulder, resumed throwing Thursday during the 30-minute window open to the media.

Smith, who lost his starting job to Michael Vick, was noncommittal Wednesday on whether he'd be able to assume the No. 2 role when the New York Jets face the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. He said he was taking it day by day. That he was able to throw Thursday bodes well for his chances of suiting up. Rex Ryan has been optimistic throughout the week.

Smith suffered a "stinger" last Sunday and he aggravated it on his final play of the game -- a shoulder-tackle on an interception return. If for some reason he can't suit up as the No. 2, the Jets would promote Matt Simms from the practice squad.

In other injury-related developments, cornerback Darrin Walls (knee, calf) missed practice for the second day in a row. Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley returned after missing a day because of an illness.
