Giants still dropping like flies at safety, offensive line

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- One of the reasons the New York Giants weren't panicked after losing two more safeties to season-ending injuries Saturday night was because they believed Landon Collins and Nat Berhe would return to practice this week. Well, they did, but Berhe lasted only one practice. He was on the field with the team Tuesday, but he re-aggravated the calf injury that has bothered him since May and could not practice Wednesday.

The Giants also continue to have issues on the offensive line, where center Weston Richburg missed a second straight day of practice due to a lingering knee injury. During practice, right tackle Marshall Newhouse had the back of his ankle stepped on and limped off the field to spend the remainder of the practice being attended by trainers. And then Geoff Schwartz, who went in at right tackle for Newhouse, went down on a play late in practice and couldn't finish the two-minute drill.

So the first-team offensive line for the Giants on the final play of practice Wednesday was left tackle Ereck Flowers, left guard Justin Pugh, center Dallas Reynolds, right guard John Jerry and right tackle Bobby Hart, the rookie seventh-rounder from Florida State.

Now, Schwartz could be fine. He seemed to be lobbying to get back on the field after whatever injury he suffered. But the Richburg injury has been a problem for several weeks now, and if Newhouse is out for any length of time, that definitely affects the line depth. The Giants have high hopes for their offense this year due to the quality of their skill position players. But they know that they need the line to be sound if they want to get the most out of all that talent. Two rookies at tackle is not the preferred way to go.

As for safety ... Collins is indeed back at practice, but that leaves open the question of free safety, which was the position into which the Giants hoped Berhe would grow this season. Veteran Brandon Meriweather isn't a coverage guy, and is in fact a very similar player to Collins in terms of style and strengths. Veteran Jeromy Miles could be the leading candidate for free safety right now, though Cooper Taylor remains in the mix. Basically, a month into camp, major questions remain at a position that was the biggest question when camp started.
