Giants' Victor Cruz says rehab from knee injury is still on track

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Victor Cruz said last December that he hoped to recover from his knee injury in time for New York Giants training camp and play in Week 1 of the 2015 season. Nearly six months later, Cruz continues to harbor those same hopes.

"Things are going well," Cruz said Wednesday, after the Giants wrapped up an OTA practice that he watched from the sidelines with his right knee wrapped. "I'm running more routes and patterns, feeling more confident all the time in that regard. Same schedule. Just going to take it slow for now."

Cruz spent the early portion of Wednesday's practice running routes by himself on a field separate from his teammates and under the supervision of coaches and trainers. He says he's been running routes for about two weeks now, more every day, and that having his teammates around to watch him and offer encouragement has been a help.

"I'm itching," he said. "I'm running my routes, feeling good, but I know there's still a process and I have to respect that."

Cruz tore the patellar tendon in his right knee in the Giants' Week 6 loss in Philadelphia last season and had surgery to repair it. He and the team have said several times in the offseason that the recovery has gone well and they expect him to play Week 1 against the Cowboys, though that obviously assumes no setbacks with the recovery.
