Coughlin says team 'un-Giant-like' last week

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Tom Coughlin has no use for trash talk, and even less use for 27-0 losses.

So it's probably no surprise the New York Giants coach made the connection with how the Giants acted last week and how they played Sunday night in Philadelphia.

Given how they played and what their coach said, it's also no surprise this was a much quieter week at Giants camp. In fact, the strongest words came from Coughlin himself.

In his weekly interview with the team's official website, Coughlin complained that his players had been "un-Giant-like" in the run-up to last Sunday's game, and that they were "a distracted group" in the days leading up to the blowout loss.

Coughlin declined to elaborate on those comments Friday, and only offered a quick "no" when asked if he thought the Giants were distracted this week.

Were they distracted by all last week's talk?

"[Coughlin] probably felt that way," defensive tackle Mike Patterson said. "As far as team-wise, as players, I don't think we were distracted. We weren't fundamentally sound on the field. We let things slide through, but I don't think it has to do with any distractions."

It probably doesn't, but losses like that one can lead to the kind of focused week of practice the Giants said they had this week, heading into this Sunday's game in Dallas against the Cowboys.

"We gave up 27 points, that's not like us," defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul said. "Whatever we had to do to make things right, we did this week."

"Nothing we did last week was good enough," safety Antrel Rolle said. "We came here to correct everything this week."

The Giants spoke with respect about the 5-1 Cowboys, a contrast to some of last week's comments about the Eagles. Then again, the Cowboys weren't talking trash, so the Giants had nothing to respond to.

"They're a confident team, and they have a right to be, at 5-1," Rolle said. "No one gave them credit, going into the season, and now they're playing phenomenal. They're playing great team ball."

The Giants were a confident team last week, and after three straight wins they had a right to be. They'd like to think they're still a confident team, if a slightly quieter one.

"We lost one game, it's not the end of the world," Rolle said. "We don't need to change anything. We know how to win."

Coughlin wanted things changed, off the field as much as on it. But even if it seems the Giants responded to their coach's wish to tone down the talk, the players insist the only improvements necessary are the ones they plan to make on the field Sunday.

"[The Eagles] hit us in the mouth, and we weren't prepared for it," Pierre-Paul said. "We weren't physical [last week]. That's the only thing."

Anything else is just a distraction.
