Saints report today, practice Friday

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- The New Orleans Saints arrived Wednesday at their new home base for the next three weeks at The Greenbrier resort in West Virginia.

Players will undergo physicals, conditioning tests and weigh-ins Thursday, followed by their first training camp practice at 8:50 a.m. ET on Friday morning. General manager Mickey Loomis and coach Sean Payton are scheduled to address the media this evening, beginning at 5:45 p.m. ET.

Based on early indications, The Greenbrier is quite an impressive new setting for the Saints' camp. Spearheaded by owner Jim Justice, they did far more than roll out the red carpet for the Saints.

Over the past four months, they built the AdvoCare Sports Performance Center at The Greenbrier, which reportedly cost nearly $30 million (with help from state tax credits in a new tourism bill). The facility includes three practice fields (two natural turf and one synthetic turf) and a 55,000-square foot building that houses weight rooms, locker rooms, training rooms, meeting rooms, offices and kitchen and dining facilities.

Obviously the custom-built facilities are a dream for the Saints. But it;s a win-win, according to Justice, who also has been the driving force behind a PGA Tour event played annually at The Greenbrier. Soon the resort will also add a medical institute in conjunction with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews (similar to the ones Andrews currently has in Birmingham, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida.)

You can also find the complete practice schedule, parking information and other details on the Saints’ site if you’re planning to attend the practices -- which are free and open to the public, weather-permitting.

On most days, the Saints are scheduled to practice from 8:50 a.m. to 11:40 a.m., followed by a walk-through from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. They’ll follow that schedule for the next five days, followed by their first off-day on Wednesday. The highlight of their first two weeks will be a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 8:50 a.m.
