METAIRIE, La. -- Sean Payton made a strong statement regarding Andrus Peat's progress with the New Orleans Saints last week, saying, "Certainly we see him starting."

But where, exactly, remains undecided.

"Whether it’s at right guard or right tackle, we’ve got some time and some flexibility with regards to that," Payton said.

Peat was the Saints’ top draft pick in 2015, with the 13th overall pick out of Stanford. But he struggled early last summer with his conditioning. And he ultimately was unable to win a permanent starting gig at his natural position of offensive tackle behind established starters Terron Armstead and Zach Strief.

The 6-foot-7, 316-pounder wound up making some spot starts as an injury replacement at both tackle and guard.

During Thursday’s organized team activities practice, Peat worked as the first-string right guard -- but projected starting left guard Tim Lelito was not participating in team drills. So the pecking order remains unclear.

Payton said Peat will take snaps at both guard and right tackle, where he’ll try to unseat the veteran Strief this time around.

"I think he’s doing real well," Payton said of Peat. "He finished strong last season. Obviously he played at a few different spots a year ago. He’s in great shape, and I think that’s gonna serve him well as we’re in these practices and as we move into training camp. ... I’m encouraged with how he’s been progressing."

At least Peat’s two positions are in the same general realm.

The most surprising position switch that was revealed during the first week of OTAs was second-year defensive tackle Kaleb Eulls' move to other side of the ball -- where he worked as the backup left guard behind Senio Kelemete.

"We think he’s got a lot of the attributes that you need," Payton said of the undrafted, 6-4, 285-pounder from Mississippi State. "He’s smart, he’s tough, he’s got the size that you’re looking for. ... We spent some time in the offseason talking with him and going through that decision. Obviously it’s a big learning curve for him, but I think he’ll handle it."
