Notebook: Texas 7v7 Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- After four days of intense competition with 161 of the top prospects in the country at The Opening, a redeye flight and a lack of sleep, it would be understandable if ESPN 300 safety Deontay Anderson wanted to take it easy on Saturday and rest comfortably on the sideline while watching his Manvel (Texas) High School teammates pursue the Division I title at the adidas Texas 7v7 Championships.

Anderson is the nation's No. 39 player for a reason, though, and it isn't because he takes the easy way out. So the fatigued four-star prospect suited up with his teammates and helped them reach the championship game of the Texas 7-on-7 championships on Saturday, playing in all five of the Mavericks' games.

"This is my team, this is my squad," Anderson said. "I have to play with them. They have my back and I have theirs. No matter what the circumstances are, I need to suck it up and play."

Anderson departed Oregon at midnight PT on Saturday morning. He landed at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport about 6 a.m. CT where he and his family began the 100-mile drive to Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station, stopping only to grab a quick breakfast at Chick-fil-A on the way there. Manvel's first game in the championship bracket began at 9 a.m.; Anderson arrived at 8:30 a.m. and suited up just in time.

Though visibly gassed from the lack of sleep, travel and previous four days in Oregon, he still found a way to make plays, grabbing two key interceptions in the Mavericks' second-round victory against Waxahachie (Texas) High and making more big plays throughout his team's run to the final, where it lost to Austin Westlake.

When it was suggested to Anderson that he probably should be sleeping instead of roaming the secondary for Manvel in 95-plus degree Texas heat, he said, "Hey, I just want to win a championship."

Anderson excelled in Oregon, making the Nike Football Rating Championship by posting a SPARQ score of 130.95, 10th-best among all competitors. That score included a 4.41-second 40-yard dash, a 36.6-inch vertical jump and 4.01-second short shuttle. It was Anderson's second trip to The Opening Finals; he competed in 2014 also.

The 6-foot, 202-pound safety will take a brief breather before training camp begins with his high school team next month. He doesn't plan on making any recruiting visits in the coming weeks, but already has an official visit to USC scheduled and said he's also planning on taking official visits to Ole Miss, LSU, Texas A&M and Texas. As for his decision timeline, it isn't any time soon.

"[It will be] after the season," he said. "I want to do it at the Under Armour All-American game, but if that's not the right time, then [it'll be] national signing day."

More from the Texas state 7-on-7 tournament:

Manvel duo close to deciding

Two of Anderson's coveted Manvel teammates are nearing decisions. Four-star running back D'Vaughn Pennamon and three-star linebacker Jordan Carmouche believe they are almost ready to make commitments before the season begins, and both could be SEC-bound.

Ole Miss, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Oklahoma State are still in contention for Pennamon, and the Rebels appears to have the edge at this point. "Their coaching staff reminds me of my coaching staff," Pennamon said of Ole Miss. "It's really a home feeling." Carmouche admitted Arkansas is in the lead for his pledge. He's planing to visit Texas on Saturday and is still talking to Oklahoma and Missouri.

Dee Anderson enjoying fresh start

After leaving West Mesquite this spring, ESPN 300 receiver Dee Anderson intends to enroll at powerhouse DeSoto High and played with their 7-on-7 squad this summer. The LSU pledge had fun teaming up with ESPN 300 Ohio State QB commit Tristen Wallace and the Eagles' loaded offense.

"It's been fun, I love this experience," Anderson said. "Can't wait until we put on the pads on Friday nights and get it going. Tristen is a good leader and he's vocal, very vocal. I like that."

Anderson will face some hurdles toward getting eligible to play at DeSoto this fall, but that hasn't stopped other programs from recruiting him hard. He's solid with LSU, but still keeping an eye on Texas.

"Texas is pushing for sure," Anderson said. "DeAndre McNeal is my cousin, and Coach (Jay) Norvell is a cool dude and straightforward. I'm going to visit Texas on July 18 and then LSU on July 23."

Omotosho trims list to 10

ESPN 300 WR Audie Omotosho released a top ten on Saturday after the tournament

Of those 10, Omotosho said he wants to squeeze in visits in the coming weeks to Arkansas, Cal, Maryland, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, SMU, Texas Tech and UCLA before training camp begins in August. UCLA receivers coach Eric Yarber, Texas Tech outside linebackers coach Trey Haverty, Oklahoma State receivers coach Kasey Dunn and SMU receivers coach Justin Stepp are among the coaches Omotosho said he has built the strongest relationships with.

New Aggies commit still hearing from schools

ESPN 300 receiver Quartney Davis, who committed to Texas A&M last month, said he's still hearing from schools. Alabama and LSU have contacted him recently and invited Davis to their camps, giving Davis the feeling that both schools are interested in potentially extending an offer.

"I'm not really looking to be recruited by schools anymore," Davis said. "I'm not really open."

Davis' talented teammate, 2017 running back Toneil Carter, made his only summer camp visit to Texas A&M and said he has a good relationship with Aggies assistants Clarence McKinney and Jeff Banks.

Backup QB's stock on the rise

One under-the-radar prospect to watch is Manvel 2016 quarterback Kyle Trask. He doesn't start for his own team (ESPN 300 prospect D'Eriq King is the Mavericks' starting quarterback), but he did see plenty of action in the state 7-on-7 tournament and will see time on the field this fall.

The 6-foot-6, 211-pound Trask was busy on the camp circuit this summer and did enough to intrigue Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. After Trask's performance at a recent Gators' camp, Nussmeier invited Trask to return for an unofficial visit on July 24, a trip Trask hopes results in an offer from the Gators. So far, Trask possesses offers from Lamar, McNeese State and Houston Baptist and has interest from Colorado State, Iowa State and Louisiana-Lafayette.

Briefly

  • Austin Westlake 2017 QB Sam Ehlinger led his team to the Division I state 7-on-7 title victory against Manvel, finishing off a dominant showing over the weekend. Ehlinger holds offers from Houston and SMU and is hoping Texas is next. He was the MVP of the Longhorns' summer quarterbacks camp and plans to return for their Under the Lights camp on Saturday night. The coaches told him they will discuss extending more 2017 offers after that camp.

  • Elite 2017 ATH J.K. Dobbins was contemplating a summer decision, but now says he's leaning toward holding off until after his junior season. Texas and Texas A&M are at the top of his list early on, but Oklahoma, TCU and several more programs are on the radar.
