ESPN 300: 10 things to know

The ESPN 300 for the class of 2015 has been updated with the summer camp circuit now in the rearview mirror. Here are 10 things to know about the latest ESPN 300.

10. There are 184 prospects committed in the ESPN300. The SEC leads the way with 77 commitments followed by the ACC with 25, Pac-12 and Big Ten with 24 apiece and Big 12 with 22.

9. The state of Florida leads the way with 51 prospects in the 300. Twenty-nine of the 51 are currently committed with 22 of the 29 headed to the ACC (12) and SEC (10). There are six five-star prospects from the Sunshine State, and five remain uncommitted.

8. The number of five-star defensive linemen in the 2015 class. In the five classes prior put together, there were 15 five-star defensive linemen. Six of the eight remain uncommitted, including the top five.

7. Defensive end CeCe Jefferson checks in here. He is one of five prospects from Florida ranked in the top 10 overall, trailing only the 2013 class from the Sunshine State that produced six of the top 10. Former top-10 ranked prospects overall from Florida include NFL first-round draft selections Patrick Peterson, Trent Richardson and Matt Elam, as well as second-round pick Lamarcus Joyner.

6. There are 19 quarterbacks in the 300, and all but one have committed. When No. 55 Deondre Francois announces his decision July 31, all 19 signal-callers will be off the board. Of the 19, 14 are from west of the Mississippi River, including eight from California. When looking at where the quarterbacks are headed, the Pac-12 leads the way with six, followed by the SEC (five), Big 12 (three), and Big TenĀ and ACC with two apiece.

5. The number of players from Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville, Florida, in the 300. LSU cornerback commit Kevin Toliver II is No. 5, pass-rushing linebacker Jeffery Holland No. 41, two-way lineman Kendrick Norton No. 78, Auburn safety commit Ben Edwards No. 157 and Georgia safety pledge Deontai Williams No. 196. Trinity Christian also has North Carolina linebacker commit Andre Smith, UCLA linebacker commit Victor Alexander and Army defensive end pledge T.J. Jackson as FBS commitments on defense. Future ESPN300 prospects Shaun Wade (class of 2017) and Tyreke Johnson (2018) add to what is an entire Division I defense for the Conquerors.

4. As always, there are some strong bloodlines in the 300. No. 14 Kyler Murray is the son of former Texas A&M quarterback Kevin Murray, No. 17 Mitch Hyatt's uncle Dan Benish played on Clemson’s 1981 national title team, No. 31 Shy Tuttle's uncle Perry Tuttle also played on the Clemson 1981 national championship team, No. 37 Kahlil McKenzie is the son of Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, No. 95 Jake Fruhmorgen is the son of former Alabama and NFL offensive lineman John Fruhmorgen, No. 166 Bobby Evans is the son of former Oklahoma Sooners basketball player Bobby Joe Evans, No. 170 Van Jefferson is the son of former NFL wide receiver and Tennessee Titans assistant Shawn Jefferson, and No. 183 Chris Warren III is the son of former NFL running back Chris Warren.

3. Martez Ivey is the fifth offensive tackle to be ranked in the top five overall by ESPN. Andre Smith, No. 4 in 2006, went on to be a first-round NFL draft selection, and Cyrus Kouandjio, No. 3 in 2011, was a second-round selection in the 2014 draft. Laremy Tunsil, No. 5 in 2013, was an All-SEC second-team selection as a freshman. The final top-five ranked offensive tackle is Cameron Robinson, who was No. 3 in the 2014 class.

2. Just missing out on the top spot is No. 2 Byron Cowart. He sits in the same place as a number of high NFL draft choices before him, including first-round selections Percy HarvinĀ (No. 2 in 2006) and Julio Jones (No. 2 in 2007). Manti Te'o (2009) and Kouandjio (2011) were second-round NFL draft picks.

1. Defensive end Josh Sweat takes over the top spot. The 6-5, 240-pound Sweat, who has 4.46 speed and a 39-inch vertical, was a high school teammate of 2014 five-star and No. 5 Andrew Brown. Sweat becomes the fourth defensive end in the past five years to be ranked No. 1 overall. Da'Quan Bowers, No. 1 in 2008, was a second-round NFL draft selection, while Jadeveon Clowney, No. 1 in 2011, was the first overall selection in the 2014 draft. Mario Edwards (2012) and Robert Nkemdiche (2013) are starters at Florida State and Ole Miss, respectively.
