Indiana adds three-star Hoetzel

Max Hoetzel (Calabasas, Calif./Wilbraham & Monson) went on his first official visit to Indiana this weekend, and it was all he needed. The three-star power forward announced his commitment on his way home.

“This is such a great opportunity to play at the highest level,” said Hoetzel, who is ranked No. 56 at the power forward position by ESPN RecruitingNation’s scouts. "Coach [Tom] Crean really believes in me and knows what I can do and that made a difference."

Hoeztel had interest from Penn, Saint John’s, Maryland and West Virginia. Hoetzel is the second commitment in the 2014 class, joining ESPN 100 shooting guard Robert Johnson.

Indiana is getting a fluid shooter who wastes no motion on his shot. He can make tough off-balance shots and, at 6-foot-7, he has good position size. To make an impact at the next level, Hoetzel will need to improve his defense, rebounding and finishing at the rim.

"He reminds them of a cross between Steve Novak as a shooter and the IQ of Will Sheehey," said Hoetzel’s high school coach, Chris Sparks, who accompanied him on the visit.
