What a difference a year can make.

The Class of 2016 was known as the year of the point guard with Lonzo Ball, Dennis Smith Jr., Markelle Fultz, De'Aaron Fox and Frank Jackson all capable of finding immediate stardom on some of the biggest stages in college basketball next season.

The 2017 point guard class is quite different. In fact, there is only one point guard, Trevon Duval, ranked among the top 19 players in the ESPN 100. Trae Young and Matt Coleman both currently hold five-star status, but aren’t on the same level as their aforementioned predecessors from 2016.

There are only eight point guards still available in the ESPN 60 and the majority of them find themselves on the second half of the list.

The lack of depth and star power at arguably the most important position on the floor presents an interesting predicament for college coaches. Consequently, programs such as UCLA, Florida, Auburn, Michigan and Pittsburgh have all landed early pledges from four-star prospects.

With many of those second-tier point guards flying off the board, stakes have gotten even higher at the top where Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Arizona, Indiana, Louisville, Villanova, Syracuse and numerous others remain in the market for an immediate impact point guard in their 2017 class.
