If you like to watch Division I coaches going from high school to high school to take in glorified pickup games, September is your month.

One of the guidelines of the fall recruiting period is that D-I coaches are only permitted to watch potential student athletes compete at their own high-school gym -- and alongside only students from that same school -- thus the all-important “open gyms” of September.

Despite that practice, grassroots basketball has kept its wheels in motion on the weekends. Over the course of the last few weeks we’ve seen three showcases bringing together the best players in their region for a terrific evaluation setting, even if college coaches weren’t permitted to get a peek.
