Two-star Alexander leaning toward hoops

Two-star receiver Dondre Alexander (Iowa City, Iowa/West) has a decision to make, and it isn’t about which college he wants to play football at. It is whether he wants to play football at all.

Alexander is a Division I prospect on the hardwood, too, and as of now he is leaning toward playing basketball when he goes to college.

“My goal is probably basketball,” Alexander said. “… I’m not really sure which I think I’m better at, but ever since I was a kid growing up in Chicago it’s always been about basketball for me.”

In September, Alexander will get a clearer picture of which sport he will pursue when he receives his ACT scores.

Georgia Tech and Iowa State are two programs looking at Alexander, the fifth-best player in Iowa, for football. Alexander stands 6-foot-3 and close to 200 pounds, and he said his size is his biggest asset.

“Throwing the ball up to me and jumping over (cornerbacks) usually works out for me,” he said.

While garnering BCS interest, more basketball programs, such as Bradley, Louisville, Marquette, North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Wisconsin, are interested in than football. He said he is focusing the most on Bradley and Marquette.

There is a chance Alexander could play football in college if he signs a basketball scholarship. However, neither Bradley or Marquette have an NCAA football program.

“I want to make my decision of where I want to go play basketball and maybe if they have a football team I’ll try out for the team for my first year,” Alexander said.
