Report: Lieberman, Hammon breaking barriers

The San Antonio Spurs play against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday and the game will feature a female assistant coach on each bench. With the hiring of Becky Hammon (Spurs) and Nancy Lieberman (Kings) the NBA is breaking barriers in the sports industry. From Ailene Voisin of The Sacramento Bee:

"Normally, the Kings’ coach (George Karl) will chat himself hoarse. He can talk hoops and movies and politics into the wee hours. No topic is off the table. But he was mildly irritated when pressed about the recent addition of Lieberman and the San Antonio Spurs’ hiring of Becky Hammon a year ago. In his mind – and in the mind of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, who will be on the opposing bench Thursday at Sleep Train Arena – this is no big deal. And you know what that means, when accomplished NBA head coaches invite female assistants into their gyms, assign them the usual duties and accept them as one of the guys? Progress. This is progress. We’ll say it twice because now there are two of them."

Lieberman has been around the game for a long time and has had roles as the general manager of the WNBA's Detroit Shock, coach of the D-League's Texas Legends and a TV analyst.

Hammon was given the role as head coach of San Antonio's Las Vegas Summer League team back in July and they won the championship.
