Report: Magic want Payton to increase trust in jump shot

Orlando Magic point guard Elfrid Payton, the 10th pick in the 2014 draft, averaged 8.6 field-goal attempts last season. Most of those came on attacks on the rim.

The Magic and new head coach Scott Skiles want to see the 6-foot-4 Payton become more of a threat on the perimeter. OK, they want to see him become a threat on the perimeter.

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel explains:

"Payton tried just 55 shots from 16 to 24 feet as a rookie last season, according to the NBA's official statistics database. He ranked 105th among 211 guards in total attempts from that distance even though he logged more minutes than many of the players ahead of him. ... Payton's reluctance to shoot stemmed, perhaps, from two areas. First, as Skiles noted, Payton regards himself as a penetrator and as a facilitator. Second, Payton also lacked confidence in his outside shot. He made 34.5 percent of his tries from 16 to 24 feet and 26.2 percent of his attempts from over 24 feet."

The Magic had Payton work during the offseason with an independent shooting coach, Dave Love, who previously helped Aaron Gordon with his stroke.
