Blazers newcomer Aminu named MVP of AfroBasket 2015 tournament

Al-Farouq Aminu, who signed with the Portland Trail Blazers as a free agent in July, was named the most valuable player of the recently completed AfroBasket 2015 tournament, the Blazers reported Monday on the team website.

The Nigerian, who played last season for the Dallas Mavericks, was joined on the five-player all-tournament team by countryman Chamberlain Oguchi, Senegal's Gorgui Dieng (of the Minnesota Timberwolves), Carlos Morais of Angola and Makram Ben Romdhane of Tunisia.

Aminu led Nigeria to the tournament championship, winning Sunday's final 74-65 over Angola to earn a berth in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. In seven games, he averaged 12 points and 5.4 rebounds.
