Report: Valanciunas deal good for both sides

Starting center Jonas Valanciunas has officially signed a four-year, $64 million extension and most followers of the Toronto Raptors believe this a good deal for the player and team moving forward. From Ryan Wolstat of the Toronto Sun:

"Masai Ujiri used the word 'compromise' several times on Thursday when explaining the extension the Raptors reached with Jonas Valanciunas. It was fitting terminology. After all, both sides gave a little in these negotiations, while also assuming some risk. By inking the contract now, instead of after this season, Valanciunas leaves money on the table if he turns in a breakout campaign. Enes Kanter, arguably an inferior all-around player to Valanciunas and selected two spots higher than him in 2011 at No. 3 overall, just signed a four-year, $70-million deal with Oklahoma City. Tristan Thompson, the Canadian who was selected in between Kanter and Valanciunas, is seeking more than $80 million over five seasons. Brooklyn’s Brook Lopez commanded a three-year deal worth $20 million a season and he struggles to stay healthy, whereas Valanciunas has missed only three games over the past two seasons. ... This was a deal Valanciunas could have passed on, but Ujiri didn't have that option, not with the NBA's financial landscape changing in such spectacular fashion. Credit Toronto's general manager for once again being a step ahead and for shrewdly steering his club in the right direction."
