Report: West interested in Spurs, Warriors

SAN ANTONIO -- Free agent power forward David West is interested in playing for the San Antonio Spurs or the Golden State Warriors, according to a report in USA Today citing a source with knowledge of his situation.

West, 34, reportedly declined a $12.2 million player option to remain next season with the Indiana Pacers and on Wednesday expressed to WTHR-TV in Indianapolis an interest in continuing his career with a contender.

“At this point in my career, it’s all about winning,” said West, a 12-year veteran. “I don’t want to be in a position where we’re just fighting to make the playoffs. I want to be in a spot where we can legitimately taste the Finals.”

Such a destination could turn out to be San Antonio, which is in the midst of a derby involving several teams vying for the services of free agent LaMarcus Aldridge, or Golden State, the defending champion. Aldridge met with the Spurs on Wednesday, but he has also reportedly met with the Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Toronto Raptors and Phoenix Suns.

Veteran Tim Duncan served as part of a San Antonio contingent that met with Aldridge on Wednesday in Los Angeles, and he cleared up any ambiguity about a return next season when he told the San Antonio Express-News: “I’ll be on the court next year.”

Duncan’s return, combined with the team re-signing budding star Kawhi Leonard and sharpshooter Danny Green and the prospect of landing a star such as Aldridge, enhances the Spurs’ prospects for maintaining their status as contenders, which West would find appealing.

West was named an All-Star in 2008 and 2009, when he played for the New Orleans Hornets.
