Damian Lillard, Adidas unveil #PDXCarpet colorway

One of the few things Portlanders love more than their beloved Trail Blazers is the quirky airport carpet that used to tell them they were home. Now, they can marry those two loves.

Adidas and two-time All-Star Damian Lillard have announced a new colorway of the point guard's shoe that features the old carpet pattern from Portland International Airport.

It's hard to explain how cool this is for those who have never lived in the Pacific Northwest. This is the most famous carpet north of Hollywood, The Carpet, the bizarre, angular mint-green floor fabric that welcomed you home to Oregon like an awkward, endearing childhood friend.

(Disclosure: I lived in Oregon for four years and loved this carpet dearly.)

In true PDX fashion, the pattern was embraced for its quirkiness over the years. Instagramming your feet on the carpet became the universal way to signal your arrival to Portland, and the airport quickly adopted "Tweet your feet!" as a publicity slogan.

Last January, when The Carpet was replaced, it was treated by the public as a dying cult hero. Swatches were sold, and the pattern inspired socks, tattoos and even a local beer.

So with nostalgia for #PDXCarpet at an all-time high, Adidas is being shrewdly opportunistic. Plus, it doesn't hurt that they're scoring a PR win deep in enemy territory -- Nike's world headquarters is 20 miles away in Beaverton, Ore.

Meanwhile, Lillard has emerged as one of the league's most electric point guards, and his support from Adidas has grown in kind. His first shoe, the D Lillard 1, debuted in January -- around the same time the carpet was torn out -- and the shoe earned $1.3 million in its first three months on the market.

The #PDXCarpet colorway is released on Saturday, May 23.
