Report: Forget Darko, Hezonja may be best for Pistons

The Pistons should not be afraid to select a European draft prospect after Darko Milicic, No. 2 in 2003, turned out to be a major bust. From Drew Sharp of the Detroit Free Press:

"The best draft option for the Detroit Pistons with the eighth overall selection might be from former Yugoslavia. Take a deep breath, Detroit. It's not that bad. Understandably, the mere thought of tapping into the basketball talent from Eastern Europe sends many running to their nearest pharmacy to refill their Valium prescriptions, because it brings back memories of the Darko Milicic disaster 12 years ago with the second overall pick — the last time the Pistons tasted draft lottery luck. But the Pistons desperately need a pure perimeter shooter with that selection. And the best available pure shooter at No. 8 might be Mario Hezonja, a classic scoring small forward possessing, at least according to numerous NBA scouts, unlimited shooting range. Isn't it time everyone finally buried the Darko disaster? The Pistons blew it. They ignored the red flags that Milicic wasn't emotionally prepared for the responsibilities of becoming that transitional star for an already rapidly budding championship team in 2003. But it's ridiculous instinctively dismissing every top-10 European prospect on the Pistons' wish list because a previous mistake burned their post-Chauncey Billups/Ben Wallace future beyond recognition. Stan Van Gundy won't be scared."
