Draft preview: Kaminsky could be immediate contributor in Phoenix

At the trade deadline, the Phoenix Suns turned over their roster dramatically, initiating a change in direction away from the three-headed point guard attack. The only one left from that group is Eric Bledsoe, and while Brandon Knight figures to be in the long-term plans, he'll have to be locked up this summer.

That leaves the backcourt situation somewhat shaky, but the Suns have bigger holes to fill, primarily in their thin frontcourt. The latest mock draftInsider from ESPN insider Chad Ford has them taking Frank Kaminsky, who has serious stretch potential in the NBA and the added bonus of possibly contributing right away.

With 2013 lottery pick Alex Len making some positive strides last season, the Suns need to find complementary interior pieces that can play with him. And as Ford notes, having the forward-facing Kaminsky to play off him could be a quality frontcourt partnership. Coach Jeff Hornacek has shown a willingness to play small for extended stretches, and while the Morris twins possess unique versatility at both forward spots, the Suns do lack size when going to that smallball lineup.

But with question marks behind Knight and Bledsoe, Ford also mentions Notre Dame point guard Jerian Grant, Kansas swingman Kelly Oubre, and Georgia State guard R.J. Hunter, who could provide added spacing off the bench.

Whichever direction the Suns go with this pick, the organization is in a delicate spot. They've contended for the postseason two straight seasons and come up empty on the investment. The core is still very young and still developing, and with another lottery pick, there's a chance to add more talent to the cupboard.
