Wednesday's Heat Links: Returning to Miami was Willie Reed's top priority

Former Summer League standout Reed happy to be reunited with Heat: Sometimes when you come across a good thing the timing just isn’t right. Willie Reed found himself in that situation last summer. The 6-11 center found what seemed like a perfect match with the Miami Heat. He starred on Miami’s Summer League team for four games before the Brooklyn Nets approached him with a one-year, $500,000 deal and a chance to make his NBA dreams come true. -- The Miami Herald

Scout analyzes Heat's pickups: So what is the Heat getting exactly with its new players? We asked a veteran NBA scout (for another team) who has evaluated each of them. Some feedback, with the scout noting that “all these guys are journeymen”: Forward Derrick Williams: “When he was at Arizona, he got to the line a lot [8.2 free throw attempts per game]. He was a post up 3 [small forward], got to the basket and got fouled. But that hasn’t translated to the NBA. [He has averaged 3.1 free throw attempts per game as a pro]." -- The Miami Herald

New Heat center Willie Reed in his ideal situation with Miami: There were times Willie Reed thought about giving up. His hopes of making an NBA team were quickly fading. But after going undrafted out of college, playing in Spain and bouncing around the NBDL, Reed finally feels his opportunity is now. After signing with the Miami Heat last week, Reed is expected to back up starting center Hassan Whiteside, who also took a roundabout path before latching on with the Heat two seasons ago. -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Florida GOP chair in Cleveland: We gave LeBron his first championships: The Republican Party of Florida chairman took a friendly dig at the Republican National Convention’s host city — Cleveland, Ohio — Tuesday night while delivering Florida’s delegation vote tally. “We are the state that gave LeBron James his first two championships,” Blaise Ingoglia said, smiling, to laughs and playful boos from the crowd. Because Ingoglia was, of course, delivering that line in the Quicken Loans Arena, where James now plays as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. -- The Palm Beach Post
