Wednesday's Pistons Links: Johnson to lead summer league team

Johnson, Nix and rookies highlight Pistons summer league roster: Second-year forward Stanley Johnson and rookies Henry Ellenson and Michael Gbinije, plus former Michigan State big man Derrick Nix, highlight the Detroit Pistons 2016 Orlando Summer League roster. The team announced the roster Tuesday evening, leading up to the first game at 3 p.m. Saturday against the New York Knicks. -- Detroit Free Press

Pistons might join chase for Horford: When the free-agency period begins just after midnight Friday, Pistons general manager Jeff Bower won’t be able to go bananas. The salary cap, which exploded from $70 million last season to a projected $94 million this year, will send many general managers flocking to the mall like teenagers with a credit card. But the Pistons, with an estimated $15 million, have a short shopping list — a veteran backup point guard and a backup power forward. Detroit could shop on the high-end rack for a versatile big man like Atlanta’s Al Horford, but might get sticker shock from the bevy of bidders, who could push the price in excess of $25 million per season. -- The Detroit News

Maturing Piston Johnson works on game in summer league: Stanley Johnson had a strong finish to his rookie season before the Pistons were swept out of their first-round series against the eventual-champion Cleveland Cavaliers. Besides a shoulder injury, Johnson had a solid first year, posting 8.1 points and 4.2 rebounds. He enters his second season with higher expectations and hopes to start showing the fruits of his labors in spring workouts during the Orlando summer league tournament, which begins Saturday. -- The Detroit News

Pistons begin Summer League games Saturday: The Pistons have announced their Summer League roster and schedule for Orlando, Florida, next month, and one name with local ties is former Michigan State center Derrick Nix. Pistons participating include No. 1 draft pick, forward Henry Ellenson, and No. 2 pick, guard Michael Gbinije. Last year’s top two picks, forward Stanley Johnson and guard Darrun Hilliard, also will play. Lorenzo Brown, who played for the Pistons at the end of last season, also is on the team. -- The Detroit News
