MLB Rumor Central: D-backs not ruling out extension for Paul Goldschmidt

Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt might be in the desert for a while longer.

Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball reported Thursday that Diamondbacks general manager Dave Stewart isn't ruling out contract discussions with Goldschmidt in the offseason. Stewart said “for this to happen, it’s going to take compromise and work from both sides," Heyman writes.

Goldschmidt and the Diamondbacks agreed upon a five-year, $32 million extension in 2013. The 28-year-old is a four-time All-Star and won both a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove in 2013 and 2015. Goldschmidt is among the top five all-time leaders in Diamondbacks history in nearly every offensive category. He has a .299 batting average, 474 RBIs and 132 home runs in seven seasons, all with Arizona. This season, Goldschmidt is batting .294 with 16 home runs and 62 RBIs.

In March, the Kansas City Royals and catcher Salvador Perez agreed to a five-year, $52.5 million contract extension. Royals GM Dayton Moore said Perez outperformed his five-year, $7 million deal signed prior to the 2012 season. In light of Moore's comments on Perez, Arizona Central's Nick Piecoro asked Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall in March if Goldschmidt's deal, which is widely considered to be a team-friendly contract, should be re-worked.

“Paul has never made it an issue nor do I think he ever will,” Hall told Piecoro. “He’s such a good guy, and I don’t think he’s focused on it. It’s something we talk about internally and something we’re going to have to figure out the timing of, if and when we go there.”

Piecoro writes that more than one of Goldschmidt's teammates "believe that if the club is serious about keeping Goldschmidt beyond his current contract, it might want to act sooner rather than later."
