Minnesota Vikings draft preview: Quarterback

Leading up to the start of the 2015 NFL draft on Thursday, we'll be taking a position-by-position look at the Minnesota Vikings' roster:

Position: Quarterback

Current personnel: Teddy Bridgewater (signed through 2017), Shaun Hill (2016), Mike Kafka (2015).

Projected starters: Bridgewater

Departures: Matt Cassel (traded to Buffalo Bills), Christian Ponder (signed with Oakland Raiders)

Total cap charge: $5.47 million (26th)

Scouting report: The Vikings believe they're set for the foreseeable future at the game's most important position after Bridgewater delivered an impressive rookie season that saw the Louisville product improve throughout the year. After taking over for an injured Matt Cassel on Sept. 21, Bridgewater completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 2,919 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in a total of 13 games. The team signed Hill to a two-year contract to back up Bridgewater, and signed Kafka after taking a long look at him during the NFL's inaugural veteran scouting combine in March. But Bridgewater is the focal point, and the Vikings like where they're headed with him.

The last quarterback drafted: The Vikings traded back into the first round to select Bridgewater 32nd overall last season.

Potential targets: The Vikings haven't scouted quarterbacks with the same urgency this spring, but they could still stand to acquire a developmental passer who could either become Bridgewater's long-term backup or a trade chip. A big, talented quarterback such as South Alabama's Brandon Bridge could be someone the Vikings can mold into their system. Kafka has the arm to be that kind of player too, but if the Vikings want to bring in someone younger than 27, keep an eye on a late-round pick or an undrafted free agent who could land on the practice squad.

Need rating (scale of 1 to 10): 2
