Previewing Dolphins free agents: DE Derrick Shelby

The Miami Dolphins have a lot of decisions to make in February, as they plan to slash payroll to make room to spend on the draft and free agency. But the team also has several in-house free agents to address.

With that in mind, ESPN.com’s Dolphins page is highlighting key players whose contracts have expired and evaluating their chances to return to South Florida. Next is Miami’s veteran defensive end.

Pending free agent: DE Derrick Shelby

2015 stats: 37 tackles, 3.5 sacks, one interception

Analysis: Shelby had an interesting 2015 with Miami. A career backup, Shelby got a chance to start the final nine games for the Dolphins when former Pro Bowler Cameron Wake was lost for the season with an Achilles injury. Shelby held his own and could have an opportunity to start again next season if fellow free agent Olivier Vernon doesn’t return. The Dolphins see value in Shelby and know his game better than any other team.

Chances of returning: 75 percent
