Jets' Richardson will miss first meeting vs. Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins caught a break on an otherwise quiet Thursday in the NFL. New York Jets Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, the league announced.

Why is this important for Miami?

Besides a division rival losing one of its best players, Richardson will miss the first meeting against the Dolphins on Oct. 4. That will be the final contest of Richardson’s four-game suspension and one less issue to worry about for Miami's offense line.

The Jets’ defensive line has been problematic for the Dolphins in recent years. New York registered nine sacks in two meetings against Miami last season.

Now, two Pro Bowl players in the AFC East are suspended for the first month of the season. In addition to Richardson in New York, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady also is suspended four games following the "Deflategate" controversy.

Brady is in the process of appealing his suspension.
