Where Dolphins currently stand with salary cap

The Miami Dolphins began implementing their plan to slash veteran salaries, and it resulted in four roster cuts in three days. Brian Hartline, Brandon Gibson, Cortland Finnegan and Nate Garner were all recently released as the Dolphins attempt to position themselves for the start of next week's free-agency period.

What does this mean for the Dolphins' salary cap? According to ESPN's Stats & Information, the Dolphins currently have $15.363 million of cap room as of Tuesday.

Of course, things will change often as more roster transactions come down the pike. But Miami's front office, led by general manager Dennis Hickey and new vice president Mike Tannenbaum, has done a solid job thus far of creating wiggle room to make moves this offseason.

The Dolphins ended last season very tight on the cap. However, the four roster cuts in the past several days alone saved Miami approximately $13 million. That is enough to go after or retain about three solid players if Miami chooses. The Dolphins also are carrying $6.482 million in dead money.

Certainly, there will be more cuts on the way. On Monday we listed five players potentially on the chopping block this offseason, and two (Finnegan and Garner) already occurred on Monday. Other players who should be nervous are defensive tackle Randy Starks ($5 million salary) and linebackers Dannell Ellerbe ($8.45 million) and Philip Wheeler ($3 million) as the Dolphins continue to look for ways to cut salaries.

Teams can begin negotiating with free agents on Saturday. Players can officially sign with teams on March 10.
