Stein's Power Rankings: Preseason edition

Kevin Durant's drop all the way down to No. 8 in #NBARank because of that foot fracture?

I understand the outrage.

Oklahoma City slipping from No. 5 to No. 10 in the preseason edition of ESPN.com's weekly NBA Power Rankings after losing Durant for at least six weeks?

Hopefully you understand the way these rankings work by now.

I still gave Durant a 10 when #NBARank asked me for an updated KD score in the wake of the first serious injury of his career. With no evidence (yet) to suggest that his Jones fracture might cause any sort of long-term problem, I saw no need to downgrade the reigning MVP's individual ‎reading.

In the Power Rankings, by contrast, ‎your dutiful committee (of one) couldn't ignore the fact that the Thunder have also lost Anthony Morrow (knee) and rookie Mitch McGary (foot) for extended periods in addition to losing Durant, while also seeing Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb, Nick Collison and Kendrick Perkins all deal with injury-related issues this month.

So the Thunder, for the moment, have slipped to seventh in the West according to the rankings we published Monday. That's where rankings math says they belong in this moment, even though I still think OKC could end up winning the West in the spring as long as Durant, Russell Westbrook and Serge Ibaka are all reasonably healthy by then.

In this week's other notable moves, as always at this time of year between the training camp edition of the rankings and this batch on the eve of opening night, injuries are a major factor. Washington thus dropped out of the top 10 (from No. 9 to No. 11) largely because of the wrist injury suffered by Bradley Beal, while Memphis climbed into the top 10 (No. 11 to No. 8) at least in part because ‎of the early health woes endured by the Thunder and Wizards.

PS: My grand-scheme stance on #NBARank scoring has most definitely not changed. I still contend that there are no perfect 10s in the NBA, or any sport, but based on the rules of #NBARank as they are written, Kevin Durant is far more a 10 than a 9. Even with a bad wheel.
