Dodgers set spring rotation

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The Los Angeles Dodgers open their Cactus League schedule Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox at Camelback Ranch. Erik Bedard, who is trying to revive his career in camp on a minor-league deal, will be the starting pitcher. Clayton Kershaw will start Thursday, also against the White Sox.

Bedard, 36, hasn’t made as many as 30 starts in a season since 2006. The lefty pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays last year, but the Rays released him after a series of bad starts in August. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he hasn’t formed an opinion on Bedard’s effectiveness from watching his bullpen sessions this spring.

“I just know him from the past. He knows how to pitch,” Mattingly said. “He can get to both sides of the plate well. He started out well last year and then it kind of fizzled, but we’ll get him in camp, see what it looks like.”

Wednesday also marks the Dodgers’ first brush with baseball’s new pace-of-play rules. Clocks are being installed at the spring-training stadium the Dodgers and White Sox share to ensure that inning breaks and pitching changes don’t take too long. Hitters also will be barred from stepping out of the batter’s box in some instances, though fines don’t begin until May 1.

Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz said he might “run out of money” racking up fines -- which begin at $500 -- but Mattingly said he doesn’t think it will affect Dodgers hitters much.

“It’s something guys are going to have to get used to,” Mattingly said. “It’s like anything else. Guys are going to adjust. It’s like throwing 100 [mph]. If you keep throwing 100 and you keep throwing all fastballs, you’re going to get hit.”
