Preseason schedule nearing completion

The Kansas City Chiefs still haven't announced their preseason schedule, but it is set barring any last-minute changes. The Chiefs will open their exhibition schedule on Thursday, Aug. 7 against the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium. Following are games on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Aug. 17, at home against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, Aug. 23, and on the road against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, Aug. 28.

The third game on the preseason schedule is usually the featured contest. That is the one in which the starters generally play the longest, so Chiefs fans will be treated to the best that exhibition football has to offer when the Vikings come to Arrowhead. If he's still Minnesota's regular quarterback by then, Matt Cassel will start in Kansas City that night for the first time since being benched at halftime of the Chiefs' 28-6 loss to Cincinnati on Nov. 18, 2012.

If the Chiefs indeed start the preseason on Aug. 7, they are eligible to start full-squad training camp on July 23 at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.

A reminder that when the NFL releases the regular-season schedule, look for the Chiefs to begin at home. The Royals are on the road on Sept. 7, the first Sunday of the season. But the Royals occupy the Truman Sports Complex the next two weekends, so unless the Chiefs play in prime time they will be on the road then.
