Chiefs to begin training camp without Jamaal Charles

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Running back Jamaal Charles was placed on the physically unable to perform list and won't participate Saturday when the Kansas City Chiefs begin full-squad training camp.

Coach Andy Reid didn't call the move a setback for Charles, who tore the ACL in his right knee in a game last October against the Chicago Bears.

"He's on track," Reid said. "He's played a lot of downs. He knows what he needs to do to be ready. I think we'll be fine there. The important thing is that we're patient with him, and that when he's ready to go he's back and can do what he does."

Reid said he was unsure when to expect Charles to pass his physical, be removed from the PUP list and be available for practice.

"I don't think it will be by Saturday," Reid said. "We're just going to take our time with this. We're going to make sure he's good and everything is set there."

Charles, the leading rusher in Chiefs history (7,220 yards), missed most of the team's offseason practices but participated in some individual drills.

Charles posted to his blog an update on his condition last week. He didn't indicate whether he would be available for the start of training camp, but did write, "Everything is going according to schedule."

Backup running backs Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West combined to rush for more than 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in the 11 games after Charles was injured last season. Ware and West signed contract extensions in the offseason.
