Chiefs practicing without Demetrius Harris, two other young players

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs are likely to continue their pre-training camp minicamp Thursday without three young players, including tight end Demetrius Harris. Neither Harris nor the other players, quarterback Tyler Bray and linebacker Ramik Wilson, worked on Wednesday as the minicamp started.

The Chiefs are hopeful that Harris, a basketball player in college, can be their second tight end and provide another receiving option at the position beside Travis Kelce. But Harris, who missed the second half of last season because of a broken foot, had a second surgery in May. The injury wasn’t healing properly before that.

Harris is on the physically unable to perform list. Assuming he won’t be ready to practice on Saturday when the Chiefs begin full-squad training camp, fifth-round draft pick James O'Shaughnessy and journeyman Richard Gordon will be the top backups to Kelce.

Bray and Wilson are on the non-football injury list, Bray after tearing his ACL playing basketball in January and Wilson with a back strain.

The Chiefs have starter Alex Smith, Chase Daniel and Aaron Murray at quarterback. But the Chiefs like Bray’s ability and if he rejoins them for practice, they would have an interesting decision to make about which quarterback they would discard.

Wilson is a fourth-round draft pick from Georgia who showed good instincts and ball skills during offseason practice. His main contribution as a rookie would likely come on special teams because the Chiefs have veterans Derrick Johnson and Josh Mauga starting ahead of him at inside linebacker.

Coach Andy Reid indicated Wilson could return to practice within the next few days.
